Overview

We are in the fight of a lifetime to defend our rights, our freedoms, and our democracy. The Power & Purpose Training hosted by the ACLU of Michigan is a free, high impact, one day experience designed to give you the tools to organize, mobilize, and lead in this critical moment. Our communities need bold action, and we need you in the fight! All we ask is that you commit to the full day and bring someone with you. Organizing is relational, and the path forward depends on all of us. Now is the moment to stand up for our democracy, so join us for this training and be part of the movement for change.

Who This Training Is For

  • This training is for people ready to turn outrage into action. People who want to learn how to organize effectively in their community, have persuasive conversations that move people to action, and build lasting connections with others who are ready to rise to the moment.

  • This training is for people who align with the mission of the ACLU of Michigan, to protect and expand civil rights and civil liberties for all people in Michigan and who want to join us in this work.

  • This is a foundational level training, but all experience levels are welcome.

  • This will be a full day of in-person training with no virtual option provided, so please consider your capacity when signing up.

  • ASL interpretation and Closed Captioning will be provided.

What You Will Learn

  • Understand the threat of authoritarianism and the power of mass nonviolent resistance to defend democracy.

  • Learn how to map our communities and engage people through persuasive, values-based conversations.

  • Gain skills to build authentic relationships and overcome hesitation in talking to friends and family about what’s at stake.

  • Develop a plan to activate your networks and inspire others to take meaningful collective action.

Agenda at a Glance

The agenda for this training will include space to get to know the ACLU of Michigan staff and fellow training attendees. Lunch and breaks will be planned with plenty of coffee and snacks to keep you fueled throughout the day! Our sessions will include popular education to level set where we find ourselves in this moment, understanding our allies and how to best engage them, storytelling, a skills lab and actions you can take in real time. (Please note that this agenda is subject to change. You'll receive the full agenda in the weeks leading up to the event.)
