Join the ACLU of Arizona for "Smart Justice Movie Night" SJ Public Event July 20, 2019 3:00 PM - 6:00 PM MST (AZ) ACLU AZ Advocacy Office, 3707 N 7th St Ste 315, Phoenix, AZ 85014 The Campaign for Smart Justice is kicking off our Smart Justice Movie Night series with a free screening of “The Sentence”. The Sentence follows the story of Cindy Shank who received a mandatory minimum sentence of 15 years, leaving her three young daughters motherless for their entire childhoods. Cindy was charged simply for having knowledge about her late ex-boyfriend’s drug crimes even though she did not commit the crimes herself. Filmmaker Rudy Valdez documents the family’s struggles while illustrating how the “War on Drugs” has had a lasting negative impact on black and brown communities across America. The film sheds light on the injustice of mandatory minimum sentence laws which were designed to discourage drug dealing, but instead have only thrown people convicted of nonviolent crimes in prison unnecessarily for years and even decades.

#BlockBill: Rally to Speak Out about Bill Montgomery’s Appointment to the Arizona Supreme Court SJ Peak Event July 25, 2019 4:00 PM - 5:30 PM MST (AZ) Maricopa County Attorney, 301 W Jefferson St, Phoenix, AZ 85003 The Arizona Supreme Court makes critical decisions about issues impacting every Arizonan’s civil liberties, including criminal justice, reproductive rights, voting rights, and education. That’s why we're deeply worried about Maricopa County Attorney Bill Montgomery's potential appointment to an open Arizona Supreme Court seat. Montgomery has filled up Arizona prisons with people who don’t need to be there. He’s a politician who lets personal biases drive his prosecutorial practices and policy decisions. He hasn’t valued civil liberties as the Maricopa County Attorney. He won’t value civil liberties as an Arizona Supreme Court justice. The Commission on Appellate Court Appointments has received overwhelming criticism of Montgomery. He has an interview with them on July 26. He shouldn’t bother wasting the commission’s time and instead withdraw his name from consideration NOW. Share on Facebook! https://www.facebook.com/events/1632089600268046/
