Iowa's Judicial Nominating Process is not political

Iowa's judicial system has also consistently ranked as one of the best in the country.  According to the Iowa Judicial Branch, Iowa's method of nonpartisan, merit-based selection of judges is intended to limit the influence of special interest groups and political parties on the selection of Iowa's judges. The way we pick judges today is a model for the nation. It's fair, impartial, and non-partisan, and that's how it should be.

The GOP plan is a power grab

They already control two branches of state government and now they want to control Iowa's independent judiciary as well. Republicans have used their control of the Governor's office and both chambers of the Legislature to pass several pieces of legislation that were blatantly unconstitutional. Instead of respecting the rulings of the Iowa Supreme Court and the checks and balances of our government, Republicans want to change the way judges are selected so they can control the judiciary as well.

The GOP plan injects politics into the court system by letting politicians and their campaign donors select Iowa judges

Instead of protecting the independence of our judiciary, Republicans want politicians and big campaign donors to make all the appointments to the judicial nominating commissions.  They want to pack the courts with partisan judges who only agree with their political philosophy. We already know the Governor is abusing the system we have today by appointing virtually all Republicans to the judicial nominating commissions. Don't let the GOP degrade our independent judiciary further.
